Have you heard of CORE Sea? Did you know that “CORE” stands for Center for Oceanic Research and Education? At Sail Rock we are extremely proud to support CORE Sea in their mission to understand and protect the marine biodiversity of South East Asia and it starts right here in Koh Phangan!
CORE Sea in Koh Phangan have three main focuses – all of which are very near and dear to hearts: 1. Marine Conservation, 2. Marine Research and 3. Education.
CORSE Sea provide a framework for marine environmentalists, scientists, divers and other people who are passionate about our oceans to preserve our marine environments based on scientific methods.
CORE Sea is a non-government organization and to help them to help our oceans we teach all CORE Sea volunteers the PADI Open Water Course in Koh Phangan. This is our way of giving back to this amazing initiative which is helping Koh Phangan’s reefs to flourish. We also teach the PADI Advanced Open Water Course, PADI Rescue Diver Course and PADI Deep Diver Specialty Course and take them to dive sites on Saturdays to fun dive so they can become even more familiar with our beautiful Thai reefs and marine life.
When we are not busy teaching Core Sea volunteers we join beach clean ups and organize reef clean ups which everyone can get involved in. By participating in a clean up you can help too! At Sail Rock, we believe that diving in Thailand is not just about taking home memories – it’s also about giving back to the marine environment too!
Some of the other projects which CORE Sea have undertaken in order to preserve the phenomenal scuba diving around Koh Phangan include: Mooring buoy projects to ensure that boats do not need to drop anchors on the reefs, coral restoration projects to improve reef quality and artificial reef projects to attract more marine life and increase diversity.

As Scuba Divers we need to be ambassadors for the underwater world and get the word out that our oceans need help and everyone is able to do something – divers and non-divers alike can join beach clean ups, reduce their use of plastic, recycle more, re-use more and get involved!
