The plan for today is to get the Divemaster Trainees brushing up on their skills. An important part of being a working Divemaster is to be able to ‘refresh’ the skills of people who have not dived for a while, ensuring they are comfortable in the water and get the most from and given dive. Whether it takes place in a pool or in the sea, it is important that they are able to demonstrate perfectly (or near enough!) to a guest.
Skills take a while to master, no matter how good you are, but even harder is to be able to demonstrate them. Everything has to go at a snails’ pace to ensure all the elements are shown clearly. This is the major challenge for every Divemaster Trainee, getting your head around the fact that you think you look like an idiot because you are going so slowly, when infact you are probably still doing it too fast! Helpfully, there is more than one of them in the pool, so they can all watch each other. This should give them some reassurance.
As they start the skills, all of which make up the PADI Open Water course, not only is there some serious competition, but also a serious amount of laughter (obviously at others misfortune). When attempting to replace a mask, it should be noted that the strap should not still be inside the mask. When replacing a regulator, putting it in upside down would be unwise. Both lessons learnt today, errors no doubt made through nerves rather than inability, well….we hope so!
