Want to be a Divemaster? – Part 2

P1220525With a group of lads starting their PADI Open Water course today, it’s time for some real life training!

It’s ideal for a Divemaster Trainee to get a group as they really see not only how the Instructor deals with multiple students but also will see a variety of ‘issues’ as the course progresses. Day one is typically theory followed by some confined sessions in the pool. It’s the new version of the Open Water course that we now teach, which includes some enhanced skills in both confined and open water, so the boys should hit the ocean running, as it were, once they have completed their confined sessions today.

So Jet and Caroline, our other Divemaster candidate who is coming to the end of her time with us, are tasked with making sure the students are well supervised and helping the instructors when they can.

P1220524As it turns out, this course is not the best in terms of learning opportunities. With no skills needing repeating and all of the boys being instantly comfortable under the water, there is not a lot to do apart from watch and learn!

In fact, they take this opportunity to brush up on their own skills, watching Dave intently to see how he demonstrates in a real life scenario. You can see them from the surface, mentally talking themselves through each skill, just stopping short of actually doing each one (although I’m sure Jet was practicing his hover whilst trying to look like he was watching the mask removal).

With the day successfully completed, there’s nothing left to do but repay the fine that was dished out earlier (the reason will remain a secret) and wash the kit! It’s a hard life….
